Sandy Hutchens says hello and be wary

Landlords are property owners. Does that fact mean that the justice system works in their favor?

Here is a quick example: A tenant rented a unit and was in for a big surprise. We know that there are laws that landlords must follow. By the same token there are laws that a tenant must abide by. The tenant in question was a very trusting fellow.

As it happens, the property in question was not registered as a rental unit. Two families lived in the dwelling, one on the first floor and one on the second. These two apartments existed within one large single family home.

Now there was already one family living in one of the apartments at the time our hapless tenant rented the other vacant apartment. The heat was working in the apartment when he moved. One week later there was no more heat. He had to resort to an electric heater. This building was said to have had “only one heating system” and the heating bill went to the other tenant who was already living in the property.

And that was only the beginning...
